Pets are spending more time with their owners away from home, and an expanding number of spaces need to accommodate their special needs. Designing places where pets, and their caregivers, can live happy lives is discussed in depth in this article.
Federal law in the United States mandates that airports have “pet relief areas” for service animals. The post security pet bathrooms at the San Antonio airport are outstanding.
The San Antonio airport website effectively describes the pet bathrooms: “The pet . . . relief area resembles a bathroom but has multiple drains on the floors, turf grass, an ornamental water hydrant, waste bags, and a sink for handlers to wash up afterward. The areas are specifically constructed to accommodate the needs of pets and their people.” The bathrooms are conveniently located, well lit, generously sized, and also have handy cleanup hoses.
Pets traveling through the San Antonio airport, and their owners, are no doubt thrilled by its pet relief areas. The effective design of the “pet bathrooms” also improves the travel experiences of petless travelers, who otherwise would be encountering unpleasant reminders of pets’ presence in the airport.
